Queer View Mirror: Mira Robertson on Her Queer Coming of Age Novel 'Grace & Marigold'
Critically acclaimed author and award-winning scriptwriter, Mira Robertson, joins Sam and Hamish on the release of their new book Grace & Marigold. The fiction novel draws experience from Mira’s real experiences while living in London during the 1970s counterculture movement.
Mira’s story follows Grace, a 20 year old Australian woman who fights an internal battle with themselves about their sexual identity and thinks that she may actually be a lesbian.
‘I think, like Grace, I also felt that type of homophobia that was internalised.’
Mira writes a tale of unrequited love entwined; however it also dives into the 1970s culture of squatting and political protests that she also explored throughout her time living abroad.
‘It’s interesting because there are parallels [against the 1970s and the present] in terms of Australia and many other countries who are in a housing crisis. It was the housing crisis that made squatting so prevalent in London.’
