Presents Queer View Mirror
A queer and trans talk show.
How and when did you first connect with Triple R?
I was a baby mental health lawyer freshly arrived in Naarm from Aotearoa. My job involved outreaching to mental health units in public hospitals across the city, which entailed a lot of driving. We had company cars so I would amuse myself by checking the name of the previous driver on the driver log, seeing which station the radio had been left tuned to, and making inferences about my colleagues' personality and lifestyle choices. More often than not it was Smooth FM (solid choice), but occasionally and delightfully it was this very station where I'm now a presenter. Listening to Triple R was always a great balm after witnessing the many injustices faced by people captured by our public mental health system.
What does Triple R mean to you?
Community, diverse perspectives, independent voice and unbeatably curated music.
What’s your favourite Triple R story?
It's the custom during Radiothon for the presenters who are on air at the time a subscription or donation comes through to read out the name of and thank the supporter. Last year the station sent out an SMS reminder to all supporters just as Queer View Mirror was going to air, which led to a deluge of notices to read out. Once we recovered from the heart-break of realising we hadn't discovered an avalanche of new QVM fans, and with an edict to get through all the notices before we handed over to New And Groovy, Gemma and I became increasingly competitive in the speed reading stakes. By the end of the episode we were reading names like they were side-effects listed in an American pharmaceutical advertisement. As well as being great fun, it was heart-warming to experience first hand the deep affection this community has for this wonderful station.
Describe your happy place.
Either at home with my boyfriend and our cat, Beanie, radio on, reading, or out in nature with friends, hiking somewhere spectacular (I contain multitudes).
The studio door has accidentally jammed shut with you stuck inside. If there was only one album in there, what would you want it to be, and why?
Again a toss-up - this time between Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - which is queer canon and which my dad had on vinyl and was a musical gateway for me - and Derryn Hinch's Queer News Theme Tune: The Remixes – a masterpiece of our time!
