Einstein A Go-Go: Chatting with Professor Doug Hilton, the CEO of the CSIRO
Dr Shane is joined by longtime friend of Einstein A Go-Go and the CEO of the CSIRO, Professor Doug Hilton AO.
A molecular and cellular biologist and previous director of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Doug reflects on his new role leading the CSIRO for the past 11 months, the importance of creativity in science and his career to date.
“I was never sort of smart enough to be a good mathematician, I was passable. It was never going to be something I excelled at. For whatever reason my brain didn’t work in that way... I’ve always been really interested in how people’s creativity works in science. There’s a huge amount of overlap or parallels with artistic creativity. I think people who aren’t scientists somehow imagine that it’s just like following a recipe… but fundamentally research science is about discovering something that’s never been seen or thought about or understood before”.
