Finally, with North America involved in a civil war during the 1860s, both north and south saw the importance of interrupting each other's merchant shipping. In 1864 the south sent out the raider Shenandoah to sink as many enemy ships as possible, causing dozens to be lost. The Shenandoah, in effect a pirate ship, made its way to Melbourne in 1865 for repairs ... where we will pick up the story with Rex Hunter...
