Breaking and Entering: Making Waves with Veronica Vasicka
Veronica Vasicka, legendary New York club and radio DJ, joins Lauren Taylor and Simon Winkler on Breaking and Entering to discuss her pioneering work as founder of the historic record label Minimal Wave. Since 2005, Vasicka has been sharing hidden gems from the late 1970s to mid-1980s, giving those artists a platform and connecting them with new audiences:
"I felt like I was tapping into something that had been overlooked... Now, it's been an opportunity for them to hear from fans directly and feel the satisfaction of having people rave about their music and want them to play live."
Vasicka delves into the genre's unique sound, describing minimal wave as "a revolutionary take on pop music" that emerged from the democratization of music-making through affordable synthesizers and home recording equipment. The conversation also touches on her Australian connection, particularly through artists like Karen Marks, whose track 'Cold Cafe' has become iconic in the scene.
Catch Veronica Vasicka spinning her captivating minimal wave selections at Now or Never, Friday August 23rd at the Royal Exhibition Building.
