Uncommon Sense: Taking Back The Sporting Field With The Huxleys

Visual & performance artists Will and Garrett Huxley join Jacqui Baker to shoot some conversational hoops about their new performance piece for Melbourne International Fringe Festival: The Winner Takes It All.

The Winner Takes It All is an interactive work, where the local LBGTQIA+ community and their allies are invited to be welcomed into a domain that can often be associated with trauma and rejection – sport!

If you’re queer and grew up in Australia’s sports-obsessed culture, chances are you’ve experienced some element of trauma. As the Huxley’s describe it “The only way [we] can come at [sport] is by wearing something ridiculous – like fashion in the field. We both carry forward that trauma of sports and just being bullied for not being athletic”.

Through sequins, elaborate costuming and drag, the Huxleys are reclaiming the wild world of sport for queer people through a large-scale group photographs project.

“[It's] designed to highlight our differences in these ridiculous costumes that we design and make… it’s actually a metaphor for how you feel as a queer person being at odds with athleticism, dressed as a giant sequined ball trying to play sport is a real challenge”.
