Uncommon Sense: Let’s Talk About Tax Reform With Greg Jericho
Greg Jericho, Chief Economist at The Australia Institute & the Centre for Future Work joins Amy Mullins for a rigorous exploration of the history tax reform in Australia in the context of Labor’s recent re-jigging of the Stage 3 tax cuts to be more fairly distributed to benefit low- and middle-income earners.
‘One of the long, long, long term projects of conservative governments has been a flat tax where essentially everyone pays the same marginal tax rate. The reason why conservatives and Liberal governments, conservative economists and conservative media people love that, is a flat tax invariably means a massive, huge tax cut for the wealthy.
You can use any type of spin you want and call it reform and talk about things like bracket creep, but essentially what they were after was a big tax cut for the richest.”
