Uncommon Sense: Johann Hari On Dismantling The Unjust Social Systems That Have Stolen Our Focus
Best-selling British author Johann Hari speaks in-depth with host Amy Mullins live for part two of their conversation on his book, Stolen Focus: Why You Can't Pay Attention. Johann discusses the crisis of attention in both children and adults, how 'big tech' saps our ability to focus, as well as the insidious environmental factors that affect our attention, like pollution and chemicals.
Johann explains how the current approach, based on "cruel optimism" and individual responsibility is not working. "At its worst...self-help is training people to individually adjust to unacceptable, morally unjust social systems. What I want to do is... overthrow these unjust systems [that have stolen our focus], let's get rid of them," says Hari.
Johann explains how we can take our focus back and support children and teenagers to do the same. We don't have to be either pro-tech or anti-tech to solve the problem.
