Indigenuity: Uncle John Baxter on 'Unfinished Business', a First People's Disability Exhibition
For International Day of People With Disability (December 3), Uncle John Baxter, a proud Latja Latja/Narungga man, chats to Maddi Miller about Unfinished Business, a new exhibition at Museums Victoria showcasing the stories of First Nations people with disabilities. The exhibition contains 30 portraits of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members and their lived experience as people with disabilities, which was developed in collaboration with Uncle John. Each participant’s story is complex and intertwined with Australia’s political and social history, which has resulted in today’s high rates of disability in Aboriginal and Torres Strait communities. Uncle John and Maddi talk about the particular importance of telling one's own stories and self-determination in such a context.
