The Score: Why Tamil Refugees Are Still No Closer To Escaping Migration Limbo
Guest host of The Score, Nana Owusu, spoke with Renuga Inpakamur, spokesperson for the Tamil Refugee Council, about the devastating impact of Australia's harsh migration system following the tragic death of Tamil asylum seeker Mano Yogalingam.
Renuga emphasised the profound pain and displacement experienced by refugees, many of whom fled persecution and genocide in Sri Lanka, only to spend years trapped in Australia’s so-called "fast-track" system. Far from fast, this process is agonisingly slow, forcing asylum seekers through endless court battles and rejections. The emotional toll of this uncertainty leaves them in a constant state of limbo, with no security or clear path to build their lives in Australia.
The 24/7 encampments by the Tamil Refugee Council, which have continued for over a month outside Minister for Immigration Tony Burke's office and in major cities across so-called Australia, reflect mounting frustration with a system that prolongs suffering.
Refugees are demanding an urgent end to this limbo, calling for a permanent solution that recognises their struggle and provides them with the certainty and safety they desperately need.
“Our organisation amplifies the voices of refugees and shows the real truth that isn’t shown in the media.”
