The Score: MESSing Around With Sound With Nyokabi Kariũki
Nyokabi Kariũki is a Kenyan composer, sound artist and researcher.
Currently in town for a residency with M.E.S.S and a recent Australian tour, Nyokabi joined Daisy Nduta (guest-host of The Score) in the RRR studios for a chat about her musical practice, her journey in the world of sound composition and her love of experimental sound practices.
“I would say that in Kenya, there were so many situations for instance, you’d go to a wedding and everyone is singing. I think there was just that culture of everyone is a music maker, it’s not necessarily a separated activity. So, when I look back at those experiences I start to understand that they added up into the musician that I am today and the voice is a big part of those situations… it’s the immediate instrument that we all have.”
