The Score: Fostering Space With Loud Jew Collective
Gem Walsh and Max Kaiser are members of the Loud Jew Collective (LJC), a 'ragtag', volunteer-run group working to be "a home and community for inspiring and radicalising Jewish cultures, knowledges and politics".
Chatting to Samira Farah on The Score, Max and Gem explain the ways LJC originated in response to the needs of some Jews who felt alienated by the zionism and conservative politics in other, existing community groups. LJC have held space for more radical expressions of Judaism through events like alternative Passover seders and other rituals, film screenings, workshops and panel discussions, and their work is driven by anticolonial, antiracist and antinationalist politics.
Max notes that LJC has participated in pro-Palestine solidary actions since its origins, and has continued over recent months including weekly participation in the pro-Palestine rallies in the CBD each Sunday.
Together, Max, Gem and Samira discuss LJC's actions - such as Gem's participation in recent Pine Gap blockades in central Australia - in the context of what they see as a global and intersectional struggle against oppression, in solidarity with First Nations, queer, Muslim and other intersecting communities.
For Gem, "We have the opportunity now to create the world we want to see".
