The International Pop Underground: Sharon Van Etten on Letting Go of Her Ego & Embracing 'Jamming'
After releasing six albums under her own name, Sharon Van Etten has issued her seventh record with the band handle Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory.
The billing reflects the making of the album, which came in collaboration with her live band: Teeny Lieberson, Devra Hoff and Jorge Balibi.
Initially gathering to rehearse for a tour, the quartet found themselves improvising new material; or, as Van Etten is loathe to say, 'jamming'.
"I tend to not that like that word," Van Etten says, "there's such a negative connotation to that, but there was no better word for what we were doing."
Speaking with Anthony Carew on the International Pop Underground, Van Etten talks about the album, letting go of her ego and 'control freak' tendencies, coming up with a new band name, and her reasons for releasing the record as Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory.
"The band, and the sonics that we were creating, it was redefining my style of writing," offers Van Etten.
"I knew that it was something different to myself. That we were creating something as a collective. And I didn't want to just stamp my name on it without acknowledging who else inspired it and helped create it."
