The International Pop Underground: Norwegian Icon Susanna Talks Love, Lies & A Life In Music

In her 25-year career, the 45-year-old Norwegian artist Susanna Wallumrød has released nine albums as Susanna, three under the name Susanna & The Magical Orchestra, plus full-length collaborations with Jenny Hval, Ensemble neoN, and Brotherhood of Our Lady.

After recent years found her setting Baudelaire poems to music and covering old folk tunes, her latest album, Meditations On Love, consists entirely of her own songs. And, as its title suggests, they're orbiting a singular theme.

"The theme of love panned out quite early," Wallumrød says. "The theme of relationships, and all the difficult or complex situations within a relationship or being in-between [relationships]."

In conversation with Anthony Carew on The International Pop Underground, Wallumrød speaks about Meditations On Love, how knowing someone who lived a secret double-life in two relationships set her songwriter's gears turning, interpreting the tunes of others, and performing for over two decades.
