Interview
Spin Cycle: Journalist David Leser On The Downfall Of Alan Jones
The Spin Cycle crew are joined by award-winning journalist and author David Leser for a deep conversation about the mythos, power and career of broadcaster Alan Jones.
Throughout his career, David has profiled an extensive variety of public figures from author Helen Garner, religious leader The Dalai Lama and New Zealand actor Lucy Lawless (known for her starring role in Xena: Warrior Princess).
But it’s David’s 1998 essay ‘Who’s Afraid of Alan Jones?’ that has returned to the centre of public discourse after the very high profile arrest of Jones last Monday for historical charges of alleged indecent assault and sexual touching.
David and the team reflect on Jones’ career, the immense power he wielded in Australian politics, and how allegations of indecent behaviour had been circulating widely since the late 90s.
“People were so scared of him. No one wanted to speak on the record. He’d had this remarkable career. It’s easy to forget when someone is old and frail and at the centre of a scandal that they were once an electrifying presence on the national stage and Jones was that.”
