SmartArts: Subverting the Love-Triangle With Chasing Dick

When writer, director and non-binary powerhouse Dax Carney-Hanrahan was challenged to create a play for regional Victoria, they decided to go back to basics.

What better way to bring people into the lived experience of trans people than through the trappings of a traditional rom-com – a love triangle.

And so Chasing Dick was born, a play about a Father & Son in a small regional community who both fall in love with the same trans woman, Dick.

Richard is joined by Dax Carney-Hanrahan & actor Matthew Richard Walshe (Of Cracked Actor’s Theatre) to chat about the show’s creation, its reception and how its challenging audiences.

“We’re running adds all over Facebook and we’re getting really hard comments from people just because of the title - Chasing Dick – it’s the name of the lady. The name of the trans woman is dick… What I’ve come to notice is that most cis people especially in the less urban areas when they hear that there’s a trans woman and two people fighting over her they think it’s something sexual, something that you’d watch at the late nights on a forbidden site that you’d erase cookies for. But it’s not, it’s actually one of my most wholesome plays ever”.

Chasing Dick is on now as part of Fringe at Theatre Works
