Respect The Rock: Superchunk’s Mac McCaughan On 90s music, Foolish Turning 30 And College Town Music Scenes
Caitlin Ramsay links up with Mac McCaughan, the lead singer of iconic North Carolina indie-rock band Superchunk and founder of beloved indie label, Merge Records ahead of their upcoming Australian tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of their beloved fourth album Foolish.
Mac shares stories from Superchunk’s long career, their past Australian tours, weighs in on the ‘music was better in the 90s than it is now’ online discourse and reflects on how US college towns helped foster entire scenes of creativity.
“We’re talking on community radio which isn’t so much of a thing here in the states… but college radio is… college radio is where we heard all the new bands… that circuit of having the radio station at the college, having the clubs that are here because there are college students to go see bands and having record stores that were being supported by that same student population.. I think that’s why college towns produced so many music scenes.”
Superchunk’s Tour for the 30th Anniversary of Foolish hits Naarm-Melbourne on December 14 at The Corner Hotel.
