Radiotherapy: Sun Safety Myths with Dr Nivati Sharma

Dermatologist Dr. Niyati Sharma joins the Radiotherapy crew to discuss skin cancer prevention and general skin health, especially regarding UV protection. Dr Sharma, a published author and leading dermatology expert, runs Inside Out, a plant-based dermatology clinic in Preston. There is an increasing decline in sunscreen use, despite the proven link between sun protection and skin cancer prevention since the "Slip, Slop, Slap" campaign of the 1980s.

Dr. Sharma emphasised that even as more people work from home, the misconception that sunscreen isn’t needed indoors is risky. UV rays can still penetrate windows, so consistent sun protection remains essential. Key tips include applying enough sunscreen daily, choosing one that fits your lifestyle, and understanding that price doesn’t determine effectiveness.

She adds, “Find a sunscreen that you like putting on. We all grew up with oily, thick sunscreen, but now there’s a sunscreen for everyone.”
