Primal Screen: Jason Reitman on Recreating Comedy History with Saturday Night
When filmmaker Jason Reitman —then fresh off the Oscar-crashing success of his second feature film, Juno— served as a guest writer on Saturday Night Live in 2008, it marked a dream come true for the self-professed 'comedy nerd'.
Having participated in the legendary show's just-as-legendary creative process, he longed to tell a story where all the creativity and chaos of its preparation were captured.
Eight films later, Reitman has finally made Saturday Night, a rollicking, rambunctious, real-time recreation of the final 90 minutes before the premiere of the first-ever SNL episode, on October 11, 1975.
In conversation with special guest fill-in host Anthony Carew on Primal Screen, Reitman talks about his love of SNL, the incredible cast he assembled for his film, the high-wire act of committing to the film's real-time gambit, and whether or not he's made the comedic Interstellar.
