Press Colour: Looking Back At Melbourne Little Bands 1979-1980
The Little Bands scene of the late 70s and early 80s has become a storied moment in time for underground music in Melbourne, encapsulating a host of many short-lived bands, who on some occasions only ever played live once or twice, would never play more than 15 minutes at a time and would share members and equipment freely with the other bands of the scene.
The main recordings made during the Little Bands years were captured by a stalwart of the scene, the late Alan Bamford, who recorded the sets on a reel-to-reel tape recorder.
Those recordings have been compiled the into a new vinyl and digital compilation called "Little Bands Melbourne: 1979 - 1980", released by Fantastic Mess Records.
Melynda von Wayward, the project creator and manager of the compilation and musician and producer Simon Grounds, who played in a number of the original Little Bands at the time both join Sam on Press Colour to discuss the compilation and the lasting legacy of the Little Bands scene.
