Local & Or General: Music, Resilience, And The Power Of Devaura
Devaura joins Jason Moore to chat about her incredible journey in music.
Born in Aotearoa and now based in Eora-Sydney, Devaura's profile is quickly rising in the Australian music scene. Her sound fuses neo-soul and rhythm-driven rap to create something that is uniquely her own.
Her story is one of resilience, hard work, and passion. Devaura shares, “Music saved my life, I was in a dark place in 2021 and 2022, I was disowned and became homeless when I was sixteen. For me, being heard was writing and making music to feel heard.”
Growing up in Western Sydney, she found solace and belonging within the local music community. “The music scene and community are that family I feel like I belong to. It's been a strong bridge to what I feel like I was missing out on.”
Despite the challenges she’s faced, Devaura’s work ethic is undeniable. Juggling her studies, a full-time job, and her music career, she spends countless hours perfecting her craft, writing twenty-five demos a week. “I’m working hard, it’s a hustle,” she says, reflecting on how she balances the demands of daily life with her passion for music. Her dedication is apparent in every aspect of her career, from songwriting to live performances.
Influenced by artists like Donna Summer, Erykah Badu, and Jess Mauboy, Devaura’s stage presence and song writing reflect the power of her influences while pushing creative boundaries. “I’ve always loved using my words as secondary percussion,” she explains, describing her unique approach to rhythm and rap. With an energy that fills every room she performs in, Devaura’s live shows are a testament to her commitment and passion for music.
