The International Pop Underground: UK Post-Punk(-ish) Outfit Chemtrails Are Obsessed with Puns & The Apocalypse
Across three albums —2018's Calf of the Sacred Cow, 2020's The Peculiar Smell of the Inevitable, and their newly-issued LP The Joy of Sects— Manchester outfit Chemtrails have made a giddy racket; churning out bubblegum pop-songs bathed in tape-hiss and distortion.
"It's always very hard to describe exactly what our music is," says songwriter Mia Lust. "We've settled on calling it 'post-garage-punk psychedelic power-pop'. But that's just because we can't think of anything better!"
In an interview with Anthony Carew on The International Pop Underground, Lust talks about sharing creative duties with her partner, Laura Orlova, about the pair's love of puns, and Chemtrails' obsession with the apocalypse.
