Indigenuity: Shelley Ware on One Year Since the Failed Voice Referendum
Guest host Maddi Miller chats with Shelley Ware, a proud Yankunytjatjara and Wirangu woman and columnist for the Koori Mail, reflecting on one year since the failed referendum where the country disappointingly voted 'No' for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament. The two reflect on how a lot of misinformation and disinformation led to the 'No' outcome, and the importance of education in countering these harmful and divisive narratives: whether it's self-education and research, or integrating First Nations perspectives, histories, and knowledges into the school curriculum.
While mob have been hurting over the past year, there's also been healing and hope on the horizon. For instance, with historic Treaty negotiation processes underway in 'Victoria'/Kulin Nations land, First Nations people around the country aren't giving up the fight to have a voice in local council, state or federal government.
As Shelley says, "it's still a 'yes' for us in our hearts and minds".
