Indigenuity: Jon Bell, Director of The Moogai (2024)

Wiradjuri, Bundjalung and Yaegl man Jon Bell is one of the most experienced indigenous screenwriters in Australia. His feature film The Moogai (2024) debuted at the 2024 Sydney Film Festival (SFF), winning the Audience Award for Best Feature, and premiered globally at the Sundance Film Festival, winning the prestigious 2024 CinefestOZ Film Prize Award. The Moogai follows the story of a young Aboriginal couple bringing home their second baby: what should be a joyous time takes a sinister turn, as the baby's mother starts seeing a malevolent spirit she is convinced is trying to take her child. The film is also a powerful allegory to the pain and reverberation of the Stolen Generations, institutionalised racism, and intergenerational trauma.
