Future Perfect: Investigative Journalist Nick McKenzie On Organised Crime In The CFMEU

New revelations reported in The Age about corruption within the CFMEU have “highlighted the entrenched nature” of organised crime in the construction sector, and “the ineffectiveness of actions by federal and state governments and agencies to combat the problem”, which was first exposed last year.

Dylan Bird is joined by investigative journalist for The Age Nick McKenzie to discuss his ongoing reporting, why there hasn’t been significant investigation from the Victoria Police, why organised crime in the construction sector is difficult to expose, and what needs to be done to see change.

“The state Labor government doesn’t want to lift under too many rocks because it doesn’t want to admit that it did know that there was some of these problems lurking on their projects, that it was warned and didn’t take appropriate action in response, and that it has arguably misused government money because some of that money has ended up indirectly in the pockets of gangsters.”
