Byte Into IT: Sarah Vivienne Bentley on Inequality and the "Digital Divide"

Dan and Lilly speak with CSIRO scientist Sarah Vivienne Bentley about her research into "the digital divide", a term to describe "socially stratified" inequities in access to digital technologies. The digital divide has been a critical human rights issue for almost two decades, as important services move online and don't leave analogue replacements behind for everyone else. People who often find themselves on the "wrong side" of the digital divide and digital exclusions include older people, people who have less financial resources, people in remote areas, as well as gender differences. With the potential of AI and rapid technological acceleration to improve people's lives, it must be inclusive of all people's experiences in the design and development process to not entrench digital inequalities.
