Byte Into It: Digital Rights Watch chair Lizzie O'Shea on Privacy and Misinformation

Hosts, Vanessa and Dan, invite Digital Rights Watch chair, Lizzie O’Shea, to discuss the future of privacy and misinformation on the internet.

O’Shea elaborates on the recent enquiry on the privacy and misinformation reform initiated by the Albanese Government. Although the reform is set to be in motion by the end of 2024, O’Shea expresses that social media platforms and their engagement-focused business model is one of the primary sources where the spread of misinformation thrives.

‘[The social media] business model is dependent on engagement, and engagement above all else. And that’s why we’ve seen accounts producing things like misinformation which goes viral and becomes profitable’.
