Byte Into IT: Bringing AI-Powered Auslan onto Public Transport

Jessica Korte is a researcher in computer science at QUT, and dials in to chat with Row, Dan, and Eric about new work being to improve Deaf people's experiences of public transport. In emergencies or uexpected changes, Deaf travellers can often miss vital updates, which leads to confusion and risks passengers' safety. To address this, researchers collaborated with Sydney Trains and members of the Australian Deaf community to create an AI-powered signing avatar that translates audio announcements into Auslan, the sign language used by many Deaf Australians.
