Breaking and Entering: Revisiting Guy Blackman's Adult Baby 16 Years Later

Guy Blackman, co-founder of Chapter Music and beloved Triple R broadcaster, joins Lauren Taylor and Simon Winkler on Breaking and Entering to discuss the long-awaited vinyl issue of his 2008 album Adult Baby. Originally released only on CD via Unstable Ape Records, the album is now seeing its first vinyl pressing 16 years later in a collaboration between Chapter and French label Pop Supérette.

Blackman reflects on the album's creation, which spanned three years following his return from Japan in 2004. He discusses the shift in his musical approach, embracing more personal themes. "In some ways, the record's about a relationship—one I'm still in," he shares. "It's kind of a record about the domesticity, the kind of mundane moments. Ben and I have been together for nearly 30 years, so it's a nice time capsule." Blackman adds, "It was also deliberately structured to kind of start with problems and finish with resolutions. So thinking about that now, the record kind of ends on a positive note. And it's still very positive now, so that's kind of sweet."

The conversation touches on the bonus tracks included in the reissue, Blackman's anticipated new album, and his recent collaborative project, The Male Gays. He also discusses the upcoming launch show, which will feature a reunion of many musicians who featured on the original recording, including members of Dirty Three, Crayon Fields, and Art of Fighting.

Catch Guy Blackman and his all-star band The Gee Bees celebrating the Adult Baby reissue on Friday, October 25th at John Curtin Band Room, with support from Mystery Shopper and Sweet Whirl.
