Breakfasters: Transforming a Coburg Grocery Store into a Community Gathering Space

Sisters Safa and Fatima El Samad have reclaimed their dad's old Coburg grocery store — once a space that represented familial duty and a sense of restriction that came from giving up weekends and school holidays to work in the family business — and turned it into a pop-up space for SWANA artists to share their works and a gathering space for community.

Safa and Fatima take this week's Fakefasters Shorty, Kirby and Carlson on a trip down memory lane, telling them about the old relics they've uncovered when cleaning up the store to get it ready for the Dukkana (an Arabic word which translates to 'store') pop-up.

Reflecting on the idea of a 'semi-public space', Fatima said "In other cities, there's a space where you can just go and you don't necessarily need to buy anything, you can just stay there and chill out. And I think this city really lacks that, especially for people of colour and non-white people."

"This is the first time we've been able to do our own events our own way and we're not answering to anyone. It's been very freeing."

The Dukkana pop-up opens on Friday January 10th, and will be open Tuesday-Sunday.
