Breakfasters: TikTok and UMG's Music Licensing Negotiation Breakdowns
For this week's Tech Talk segment, Vanessa Toholka fills us in on the latest with TikTok and Universal Music Group's (UMG) music licensing negotiations. Major artists such as Taylor Swift, Drake, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Billy Eilish, and more, have been pulled from the video platform's music catalogue after UMG accused TikTok of 'bullying' them into a bad deal that didn't adequately compensate the artists and songwriters they represent, as well as not protecting them against AI-generated music. The previous licensing agreement between UMG and TikTok expired on January 31st.
