Banksia: Māmā Mahirangi on the power of Haka

Acclaimed Māori artist and cultural ambassador, Māmā Mahirangi from Aotearoa joined Vanessa Morris on Banksia to speak about her work in Haka.

Through her work, Māmā Mahirangi presents a Women’s Haka for Healing, a wānanga (learning space) and opportunity to step into the strength, wisdom, and unity of haka, a powerful cultural practice that embodies resilience, self-determination, and collective empowerment. In sharing the Haka with non-Indigneous people, Māmā Mahirangi spoke about rules around this.

Haka is a sacred expression of strength, challenge, and reclamation. Rooted in Māori tradition, Hine Taketake, the haka being shared in this workshop, has been created specifically for women to reclaim the power of their lineage, reconnect with their voices, and stand together in unit.
