Banksia: Aretha Brown on Kiss My Art mural tour of Japan during NAIDOC Week

Gumbaynggirr artist Aretha Brown joined Vanesa Morris on Banksia ahead of a Kiss My Art mural tour of JAPAN in Tokyo and Osaka for NAIDOC week 2024.

With the aim to take the celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through NAIDOC global - the two murals will be of Gumbaynggirr leaders Gary Foley and Gary Williams.

Having completed 65 murals around the world in places including Australia, US, Canada, UK, India and Indonesia - Aretha spoke about the difference between recent experience in East Timor in comparison to painting a mural here in Narrm around the time of the referendum.

The pair discussed the Kiss My Art collective turning five this year and how it started as a way to champion young women and non-binary artists by providing jobs, work experience and a safe creative space on large-scale public murals.

Aretha also spoke about the recent release of resource for allies decolonise yourself.
