Kimbra's newly-released fourth album is called A Reckoning. It's a title the 32-year-old pop artist put in place from the beginning; setting the tenor for a record in which she hoped to "try to face [her] fears in [her] music."

Growing out of the natural reflection of the pandemic era —in which the New Zealand-born singer also moved from New York City to upstate New York— A Reckoning finds her tackling the things that, Kimbra says, she didn't know how to deal with, or didn't want to look at.

"There's heartbreak in there, there's grief, there's loss, there's also anger and rage, these cathartic feelings we don't always know where to put in the world," Kimbra offers, in conversation on The International Pop Underground with Anthony Carew.

Working with Ryan Lott of Son Lux, the album employs sounds ranging from soft prepared pianos to discordant electronic noise; marrying an experimental approach to production with accessible melody and structure.

"People go to therapy, people talk with their friends to process feelings," Kimbra says. "I do it through making experimental pop music."
