Look Familiar is the third album from The Green Child, marking a shift from recording project to fully-fledged band. What began as the partnership of Raven Mahon and Mikey Young has expanded to include drummer Shaun Gionis of Boomgates and Hobbies Galore label head Alex Macfarlane on guitar and synths, bringing fresh energy to their distinctive psych-pop sound.
Live drums add organic warmth to their electronic textures, and a collaborative songwriting process - split evenly between Mahon and Young - has opened up new possibilities. Tracks like 'Year of the Books' surge forward with motorik drive and arpeggiated melodies, while 'Private Laugh' meshes crushed fuzz-guitar with swirling synths. 'A Long Beautiful Flowing Cape' unfolds with an infectious shuffling beat and lively bassline, while shimmers of synth create a backdrop for reflections on internet interactions and distorted social connections.
Mahon's lyrics weave together personal histories and broader observations throughout the album's ten tracks. 'The Lawn' explores her grandmother's life in a desert socialist commune, while 'Wow Factor' pairs chiming guitars with meditations on international justice. Familial connections are emphasised by the cover art - a painting of Mahon's father at the wheel of a car, created by her mother in the early '90s.
