Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes is a generously gifted artist with a unique skill for bringing sounds, people, and ideas together. His growing catalogue continues to reveal a deepening and sharpening of his craft; Negro Swan is perhaps his most effective, and affecting synthesis to date. A talented collaborator, Dev works here with Caroline Polachek, Tei Shi, Ian Isiah, Georgia Anne Muldrow, actress Amandla Stenberg, and Adam Bainbridge of Kindness, drawing on their own abilities in the fields of R&B, punk, jazz, dance, funk, and the avant garde. Negro Swan follows previous album Freetown Sound with further insights into Hynes' personal history, exploring London locales of his childhood and life in his current home in New York. It's a complex and nuanced record of identity, connection, despair, depression, hope and salvation. And it's a challenging and rewarding exploration of fresh frontiers in music: subtle soul grooves, downtempo ballads and minimalist beats. Through it all we find the artist a fearless navigator and expert guide.
