Horsegirl's Phonetics On and On finds the Chicago trio of Nora Cheng, Penelope Lowenstein, and Gigi Reece stepping back from the fuzzy rock of their debut into more spacious musical terrain. Produced by Cate Le Bon, the album trades walls of distortion for clarity – each song pared to essential elements, with the occasional addition of violin, synth textures, or gamelan-like percussion. The arrangements feature clean, ringing guitars, measured drum patterns, and vocals that alternate between unison singing and call-and-response exchanges.

True to its title, Phonetics On and On plays with the sound of language itself, turning syllables into melodic hooks. The album moves through various styles – from the jangly motorik pop of 'Switch Over' to the folk-tinged 'Frontrunner' and the driving post-punk of 'Rock City' – all unified by a warm, analogue production quality that highlights the trio's evolving sound.
