Stiletto is the debut album from Naarm/Melbourne six-piece Gut Health, building on the promise of their 2022 EP Electric Party Chrome Girl. These ten tracks re-introduce the band's hypnotic dance-punk, oscillating between infectious up-tempo numbers and chaotic noise that teeters on the edge of collapse.
Recorded with Julian Cue (CIVIC, Screensaver) and the band's own Dom Willmott, Stiletto captures Gut Health's live energy while expanding their sound. Tracks like 'Uh Oh' and 'The Recipe' are dancefloor filling jams, while 'Scripture' reveals a more atmospheric side. Frontperson Athina Uh oh's lyrics touch on personal experiences and broader societal issues.
Guest saxophonist Yang Chen contributes additional textures, expanding the album's range. And Gut Health's rhythm section, spanning influences from punk to jazz, provides a solid foundation for the band's sonic experiments, which flicker between atonality and melodicism. The result is a debut that's both sonically adventurous and politically engaged.
