Sunday Salottu Session, Edition 1: LINGUA BEDDA!
The Sicilian sound system is a unique fusion of global influences rooted in the ancient pre-roman Sicel, Sicanian and Elymian cultures, grafted to the sounds of Greek, Arabic, Norman French, Spanish, Catalan, Albanian, Jewish and Italian settlers who used the island as a trading post, refuge and site of conquest.
Stigmatised and discouraged by the Italian national project, many Sicilian languages, along with the stories and music that carry them, are listed as vulnerable or endangered in their place of origin. But the Australian emigre brought these with us and today, we play a vital role in their revival.
