Three musicians immersed in high art and low culture form one of Australia’s most commanding bands. Guest soloist with Melbourne Symphony Chamber, band leader, pianist and fiddle-singer Jenny M. Thomas is joined by double bassist Dan Witton and drummer Chris Lewis in what they describe as a post-modern bush band. Using trad Australian songs as their source material their musical influences range from minimalist electro to jazz. Are they outsiders, lurking on the cultural fringe? Or have they penetrated to the inner core of Australian identity?

BBC Music Magazine gave them 5 STARS, they are multiple Best Music Weekly Award winners at The Adelaide Fringe and recipients of a Sidney Myer Performing Arts Award. The individual band members regularly work with international stars such as Meow Meow, The Australian Chamber Opera, Circus Oz & Tim Minchin.

Invited to perform at some of the world’s most prestigious of art festivals including Mona Foma, Festival # 6 (Wales), R.I.F.F (India) and WOMADelaide, they have developed an international cult following amongst those who like their jazz intelligent and their folk dark. Winning Best Band at the 2022 Australian Folk Awards they continue to smash archaic notions of what Australian folk is. Their radical re-interpretations of well known songs may have you humming along or you may end up crying.

‘If I get three musical discoveries of this calibre out of the hundreds of new musical experiences that come my way annually, I count myself blessed. JAZZWISE UK

‘Brilliant‘ BBC RADIO WALES

A collection of Australianized songs driven into strange and unexpected places.’ RTE (Raidió Teilifís Éireann)

‘Bush Gothic’s interpretations sear with power and truth. Australia’s own Bush Gothic is incomparable.’ FORTE MAGAZINE

‘A knowing postmodern aesthetic with arrangements that variously sooth, stir and surprise. Bush Gothic dive deep into the Australian national psyche and give its chain a yank’ – SONGLINES UK

‘The musicians onstage maintain an energy and intensity that is utterly riveting. Beautiful, evocative and thoroughly enjoyable, Bush Gothic is Australian folk at its finest. Mesmerising.’ RIP IT UP MAGAZINE
